How does Starlink work?

This network structure significantly boosts Starlink speeds, enhances reliability, and reduces latency compared to traditional satellite services. The European Space Agency notes that LEO-based telecom systems require a large constellation of satellites, using lower frequency bands (1.5-2.5 GHz) similar to mobile networks. These features improve connectivity and minimize signal delays.
Instead of relying on a single or a few GEO satellites, Starlink has launched nearly 4,000 small satellites, each weighing 573 lbs (260 kg). Since these satellites have a lifespan of roughly five years, SpaceX continuously launches replacements, using Falcon 9 rockets, which can deploy up to 60 satellites per mission.
Target Market for Starlink
Starlink is particularly beneficial for people in rural and underserved areas. According to PCMag, President Joe Biden highlighted that 35% of Americans in rural areas lack high-speed internet. The U.S. Census also reports that over 250,000 Americans still use dial-up, while 13 million people lack internet access altogether.
Currently, Starlink mainly targets residential users, although business plans are available. Customers must install a small satellite dish, usually facing north, and in some cases, may need an extension pole to minimize obstructions.

According to Ookla’s Speedtest, Starlink recorded the following median download speeds in 2022:
- 160 Mbps – Lithuania (fastest globally)
- 105.91 Mbps – Mexico (fastest in North America)
- 97 Mbps – Canada
- 91 Mbps – United States
- 124 Mbps – Australia
However, upload speeds have declined over time, with the U.S. median dropping from 16.29 Mbps (Q1 2021) to 9.33 Mbps (Q2 2022). Starlink also provides latency as low as 20 milliseconds in many regions.
How many Starlink satellites are in orbit?
As of February 27, 2025, there are 7,086 Starlink satellites in orbit, with 7,052 actively operational, according to astronomer Jonathan McDowell, who tracks the constellation.
While the project expands global connectivity, astronomers express concerns that Starlink satellites may obstruct space observations. Scientists also warn that burning deorbited satellites in Earth’s atmosphere could impact climate patterns.
At 342 miles (550 km) above Earth, Starlink satellites create a visually striking phenomenon in the night sky—though some argue this visibility disrupts astronomical research.
